Prostatectomy side effectsBecause prostatectomy is a large and complicated operation it has a lot of risks and side effects. The most common prostatectomy side effects are: the inability to control urination which is highly disturbing for the patient physic and the inability to achieve erection. Most men experience this side effect but most of them recover with help of treatment. Retrograde ejaculation it is very common to those who had suffered a prostate surgery. The sperm passes in the urine but this should not worry you. This does not mean that you are becoming sterile. The urinary incontinence is just temporal it can last for a few weeks; however there are cases where it can last for several months. Another prostatectomy side effect can be bleeding from severe straining during bowel movements. This may happen because the rectum is near the prostate. One can avoid this by taking laxatives and avoiding types of food that may lead to constipation. As diet is concerned the patient should avoid alcohol and spices as they are irritating factors. After the surgery the man's potency can be affected depending on what kind of prostatectomy has been performed. This happens more frequent in case of open radical prostatectomy. Also if the man is able to have intercourse he may experience burning with ejaculation. In case the entire prostate has been removed and as well the seminal vesicle the person is no longer able to emit semen. Infections are very frequent so post operative care is very important. In order to prevent infections the person must take antibiotics for a week or two after the surgery. Also in order to not develop infections it is important that the patient cleans at home the urethral opening. This is a simple procedure which can make the difference, only by using soap and water the patient can prevent developing infections. After the surgery the person may have irritation and burning with urination and also night frequency. Incontinence is a very frequent side effect. This happens no matter what kind of prostatectomy has been performed. If the problem does not resolve by its own the person may have another surgeon in order to resolve the problem. Another prostatectomy side effect is extreme blood loss that may require transfusion. For this reason it is advisable that the patient donates blood with 2-3 weeks before the surgery as it is better to use your own blood in case of transfusion. Another side effect is pain. The patient may experience acute pain in case of open prostatectomy as the incisions are larger than in any other type of prostatectomy. In conclusion the patient should assume all this risks if he wants to regain his health and a good general condition. In case of prostatectomy the chances for the patient to recover fully are very high. |
